Liver Check Test | YorkTest Liver Check

This is just a very quick note to mention that YorkTest’s Liver Check test has been in the news yet again!   As people tend to imbibe alcohol a little more than usual at the holidays, the state of your liver could be on your mind (maybe not now, but early January anyway.)

If you are concerned, YorkTest have been in the business of testing for a long time.  It is a great way to check how healthy your liver is and even better, it is totally confidential.  Here is the article: -

The LiverCheck test from YorkTest Laboratories has been used in a new study, published 29th October in the leading medical publication Hepatology, which has shown that almost a third of routine drinkers had sustained enough liver damage to increase their risk of early death.

The research at University College London found an unexpectedly high level of liver abnormalities amoung routine drinkers described as “normal working people” who consume more than average but would not regard themselves as alcoholics.

Professor Rajiv Jalan, head of the liver failure group at University College London hospitals and one of the authors of the study, said: “These are people working in offices who we routinely encounter. They are representative of working people in our society and they are at risk.”

Up to two million people in Britain have chronic liver disease. Many are unaware of thier illness. Deaths from the disease have increased by eight times in men aged 35-44 and by seven times in women over the past 30 years.

Professor Jalan studied the results of more than 1,000 men and women . Most had been concerned enough about their drinking to take the tests but not sufficiently worried to see a doctor.

The study highlights the importance of self-testing for liver disease which can help people who otherwise would not have been aware of their liver status, and would not have been followed up and treated. Typically those people are middle-aged, heavy and regular drinkers, and are aware that they may be damaging their liver through their lifestyle. They are too shy and embarrassed to go to their GP for a test, and do not want the test result on their medical records.
