What Detox do Celebrities Follow?

According to an article in The Times newspaper on 18 May 2010, these are the detox diets that celebrities use:

Naomi Campbell:  Master Cleanse Diet, which is a drink made up of maple syrup, lemon juice, hot water and cayenne pepper.  This is all she drinks for 10-14 days.  No solid food!  She claims to do this three times a year.

Gwyneth Paltrow:  Two liquid meals a day and one solid one in between for three weeks.  An example daily menu is a breakfast smoothie, carrot and ginger salad, and then broccoli soup.  Gwyneth says she does this twice a year.

Katie Price (Jordan): A seven day plan in which breakfast and lunch consists of vegetable and fruit juices.  Supplement those with wheatgrass and spirulina.  Dinner is then fish or meat with vegetables.

Kate Moss:  A diet based on drinking white tea and honey.  Essentially she eats small, healthy meals (example – oatmeal, sushi, and a balanced dinner) and each one is followed by white tea with honey.

Jennifer Aniston – A baby food diet.  (Yup – baby food!)  She eats mashed up food throughout the day (up to 14 servings) and then eats a normal dinner.

Are they any good?

Of all of the detox diets listed above, I would only try Kate Moss’ and Jennifer Aniston’s.  To be honest, I think they all sound a bit wacky, but with these two, at least you can still get a somewhat balanced level of nutrients.  You can still get plenty of vitamins, minerals, some healthy carbs, and then you’d have to get some healthy fats and protein in your one “normal” meal each day.

All of the diets sound very calorie restrictive.  I guess the idea is to lose weight quickly and cleanse the system, but these are all pretty extreme.  If you feel the need to try any type of really restrictive detox, just don’t do it for more than 5-7 days.

If you want to do a healthier detox and lose weight naturally and feel great, I suggest cutting out all refined carbs, sugar, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and any processed foods.  This will kick start you to creating a healthier lifestyle for you and your family.

One other Important Point!

In the article, each of the women commented on using these detoxes to get ready for either a red carpet appearance, a new film, a photo shoot, or some other media event.   What does this tell us?

Clearly even these women don’t always feel “red carpet ready.”  They are real people who have to go through serious preparation to look the way they do in the pictures we see of them.  So, if you’re one of those people that strives to look like these women, keep this in mind.  Are you ready to eat baby food?  Or maple syrup concoctions?

Good thing you don’t have to!

Detox time

So, the first month of 2009 is now over!  Wow, that went quickly.

I’m still feeling a little bit of the sluggishness from the holidays, so I’m considering a detox regime.  Nothing really serious, but maybe a couple of days just to kick start my body.

I have done one detox diet in my life and I think I was about 20 or 21 years old.  It was a 7 day system and was actually fantastic!  I would highly recommend it for anyone considering detox.

Here is the 7 day plan:

First 48 hours – liquid only
This includes tea (only caffeine free), water (you can add lemon juice if you need to), and triple berry smoothies.

Recipe for triple berry smoothie:
Use ice, a handful of raspberries, a handful of blueberries, a handful of strawberries, 1/3 to ½ of a banana (depending on how big the banana is), and one scoop of protein powder – must be non-dairy.  Best to find a good quality whey protein.  Something like Maximuscle or EAS works well.  And most flavors work really well with the berries.

You can have as much of the above beverages and smoothies as you want for the first 48 hours.

Next 5 days – a mix of smoothies and solids

For each of the next 5 days, you have a triple berry smoothie for breakfast and for snacking during the day.  Then for lunch and dinner you are allowed any of the following:

Baked potato – but with nothing on it unless you want vinegar or black pepper
Unsalted rice cakes
Brown rice – with nothing on it unless you want vinegar or black pepper
Non sugary vegetables/leafy greens – again, with nothing on them unless you want vinegar or black pepper (I think the most sugary vegetables are peas, corn and carrots.  I remember eating mostly broccoli, spinach and cauliflower)

From memory, you were allowed as much of the above as you want.  So, essentially, you cut out any salt, sugar, fizzy drinks, caffeine, dairy, and protein (except for the protein powder.)
By day 5, I remember I was feeling so good!  You do end up needing to go to the bathroom more than usual, mostly for the first two days, but it is worth it.  And I don’t remember feeling hungry at all.  You can’t imagine how much you look forward to that first unsalted rice cake!

Since the first time I did this, I’ve done just the first two days (liquid only) and it really helps get your body moving again. I think I’ll go for that again now.

Just a quick note to say that there are lots of unhealthy detox plans out there, so just use caution if you are deciding to try something.  Consult your doctor or a nutritionist if you’re not sure.  (Or you can always ask me and I’ll see what I can tell you about it!)

Here’s to your health!

Liver Check Test | YorkTest Liver Check

This is just a very quick note to mention that YorkTest’s Liver Check test has been in the news yet again!   As people tend to imbibe alcohol a little more than usual at the holidays, the state of your liver could be on your mind (maybe not now, but early January anyway.)

If you are concerned, YorkTest have been in the business of testing for a long time.  It is a great way to check how healthy your liver is and even better, it is totally confidential.  Here is the article: -

The LiverCheck test from YorkTest Laboratories has been used in a new study, published 29th October in the leading medical publication Hepatology, which has shown that almost a third of routine drinkers had sustained enough liver damage to increase their risk of early death.

The research at University College London found an unexpectedly high level of liver abnormalities amoung routine drinkers described as “normal working people” who consume more than average but would not regard themselves as alcoholics.

Professor Rajiv Jalan, head of the liver failure group at University College London hospitals and one of the authors of the study, said: “These are people working in offices who we routinely encounter. They are representative of working people in our society and they are at risk.”

Up to two million people in Britain have chronic liver disease. Many are unaware of thier illness. Deaths from the disease have increased by eight times in men aged 35-44 and by seven times in women over the past 30 years.

Professor Jalan studied the results of more than 1,000 men and women . Most had been concerned enough about their drinking to take the tests but not sufficiently worried to see a doctor.

The study highlights the importance of self-testing for liver disease which can help people who otherwise would not have been aware of their liver status, and would not have been followed up and treated. Typically those people are middle-aged, heavy and regular drinkers, and are aware that they may be damaging their liver through their lifestyle. They are too shy and embarrassed to go to their GP for a test, and do not want the test result on their medical records.
