The Importance of Walking

Walking: Get Moving

I have written previously on this site about the importance of walking when it comes to weight loss, weight maintenance, and general health and wellness.  But, I want to write about it again because I’m personally experiencing the effects of not walking as much.

For the last five years, I have walked at least a couple of miles 5 times a week.  This was simply getting to and from the train station, then to and from my office building after getting off the train.

Without making many other changes in my life, this daily walking helped me lose almost fifteen pounds.  Now, that was gradual weight loss, but it was without any effort, dieting, starvation, extreme fitness, or anything else.  It was great!

For the past six months, I have been working three or four days a week at a different location…somewhere I can’t walk to.   I haven’t replaced that walking with any other form of regular exercise, apart from the exercise I was doing before this change in job location.   And now, finally, six months later I really feel the difference. I feel it mainly in the belly area and in my legs.  It feels awful.

I’m telling you this for a couple of reasons.

Two lessons

Firstly, I want to stress the importance of consistent exercise, like walking.  You don’t need to have a crazy fitness plan to get yourself in better shape.  You just need to have some consistent level of fitness in your life.  You need to get up and move.  And if you can break it up into a couple of shorter sessions during the day, that is great . If you can do some or all of that activity first thing in the morning, before you eat breakfast, even better.  I honestly believe that getting some exercise first thing in the morning, before you’ve consumed any calories, is the best way to start the day.

Secondly, I think it is interesting that it took a full six months of getting out of my walking routine before my body started putting weight on again.  What this means to me is that once I get my body into good shape and do good things for it, it can hold those good results for a time without as much effort.  (i.e. it is easier to maintain your weight than it is to lose weight)

What does this mean for you?

No matter what shape you are in, adding some walking to your daily routine can bring amazing benefits.  My experience with walking has been mostly weight related, but walking is great for other things too.  Walking keeps your joints more flexible.  Walking keeps your digestive system working better.  Walking is great for your heart.  Etc.

If you can find a friend or a group of people to walk with, it makes it easy to make it part of your routine.  Or just try to walk for twenty minutes in the morning before you go to work.  Even substituting one of your drives during the day (say, to the supermarket), can be a good start.  However you fit it in, just start walking.  You will feel great and lose weight.

To your health,

Kidney Stones: What are they and what is the cause of them?

Crystalline deposits, otherwise known as kidney stones are found in the kidneys and as a rule even though they don’t generally cause any kind of long term damage, those suffering with kidney stones will tell you they can be extremely painful. If you would like to know a little more about what kidney stones are and what causes them to form, read on.

The kidneys are the organs responsible for the filtration system of the body. Any unwanted substances, such as salt acids and mineral deposits are disposed of through the kidneys as they are dissolved in our bodily fluids and passed out of the body when urination takes place.

Sometimes the substances become concentrated and solidify in the kidneys resulting in the formation of small crystalline stones which have calcium as their main component. Problems arise when these jagged little stones move from the kidneys into the soft structured ureters, the tubes which take the fluid to the bladder for removal from the body.

When a kidney stone gets wedged in the ureter pain can be experienced in various parts of the body but particularly in the lower back, the side, the groin and just underneath the ribs. The pain can be lessened by the use of medication or removal of the stone(s) by surgery.

So why do kidney stones happen?  When substances in the body which are used to form urine turn into a solid state and become crystallised the amount of bodily fluids run short. Problems also occur if there is an imbalance in the mineral and salt levels within the body and such an inconsistency can lead to the development of kidney stones.

Kidney disease, the administration of some prescribed medications and metabolic issues can all result in kidney stone formation. Nonetheless, there are also cases where kidney stones are created and no definite cause is evident or can be found.

An idea as to the cause of kidney stones can be discovered upon examination of the stone after it has been passed in the urine.  Too much calcium within the body is often the reason for this condition arising.

Stones may be the result of hereditary disorders or deficiencies in the diet. Quite often high protein diets and urinary tract infections can create excessive urine components which, in turn, can cause kidney stones.

In order to stop kidney stones recurring, a change in lifestyle may be recommended by the family doctor. Drinking more water will be encouraged as this flushes the kidneys as well as the body’s cells and helps them to function as they should.

Eating Disorders: Not Just a Female Thing

When people think about eating disorders it tends to be well known females who spring to mind. However, it isn’t just women and girls who are affected by this; men and boys are also prone to suffering with eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia.

There is a distinct stigma associated with having problems controlling what you eat and this is not something new. It has been around for a long time, although as far as male eating disorders go, many people are unaware that men and boys can be affected too. It was revealed in a Harvard study during 2007 that 25% of those taking part were males suffering with anorexia and as much as 40% were males who binge eat. These figures are relatively high for a condition considered to be more female oriented than male.

Of course, when females wear snuggly-fitting jeans and tops the effects of eating disorders are much more noticeable. The shape of their bodies is revealed and more often than not their bones protrude from under their skin, a sight which causes distress to the people close to them.

Girls and women will discuss their new diet regime with their friends.  On the other hand the male population is capable of keeping the results of their eating disorders under wraps. This is because any apparent changes in their body form are quickly put down to any other reason but an eating disorder. In fact, many parents of sons are totally unaware than eating disorders can affect their children.

Due to the fact that an association with what is predominantly a girls’ disease could be viewed as unmanly or even feminine, many men will not admit to suffering with such a condition. So, what do they do? They conceal the pain they are feeling and make sure no-one knows about their obsession with food.

Females are constantly having photos thrust at them of what the modeling agencies and glossy magazines refer to as the perfect body. This creates so much pressure on teenagers who have only one desire in life and that is to fit in and be popular with others. But really, it isn’t any different for men and boys. They also see the rock hard muscles on male models and actors and strive to obtain the same appearance in order to attract girls. In the long run, this kind of thinking can ruin the health and the self image of any male especially if he chooses to eat unhealthily and practice bad exercise habits.

Even in this day and age men are still reluctant to step up and admit they have an eating disorder because of the female association with the condition and for this reason the problem is not diagnosed by the medical professionals as much in men and boys. Recently, however, a few Hollywood actors have revealed that they are victims of such disorders and by doing so they are hoping to raise awareness so the signs can be more easily spotted by parents, siblings and friends of those who are unfortunate enough to be suffering in this way. This is seen to be the first step in accepting that men and boys are affected by eating disorders, just as women and girls are.
